An all kiri wood (paulownia) Japanese personal storage box from the early 1900's. It's unusual because the doors slide out of the way into the sides like miniature pocket doors.
When the doors are closed the left door has a small latch on the bottom that locks it in place at the bottom. The right door had a key lock that locked it to the left door. That lock doesn't have a key.
It's built using traditional Japanese joinery with bamboo wood pegs locking the joints in place (Photos # 9 & 10). It's 18 1/4 inches high (46.5 cm) 15 3/4 inches across (40 cm) and 12 inches deep (30.5 cm). Please see our "Other" items.
