RARE Takatori Takatori-yaki Antique Japanese Glazed Cascade Square Bonsai Pot
Antique Japanese Takatori-yaki cascade square. The first kiln was opened at the base of Mt. Hachizan was given the rank of samurai and took the name Takatori, Hachiz and managed the kiln. From the founding of the kiln until the domain system was abolished in 1871, T akatori-yaki production was controlled and patronized by the Kuroda family, lords of the province. The Takatori kiln is one of Ensh's Seven Kilns (Ensh nana gama), the favorite wares of the famous Edo Period tea ceremony master Kobori Ensh. The Takatori family is still active today, in the 15. Generation, with his son scheduled to succeed him. However, bonsai pots are rarely produced there. An antique one like this, which is well over 100 years old, is a very special find.

It features a sublime wood-fired warabaiy natural straw ash glaze, enhanced by a nice craquelure and heavy patina. Kobayashi, Kunio owns the most famous Takatori-yaki bonsai pot, and the feet and k stamp are identical to this example. Approximately 3.06 x 3.06 x 3.75 inches (7.8 x 7.8 x 9.5 cm).

Inside is approximately 2.19 x 2.19 x 3.31 inches (5.6 x 5.6 x 8.5 cm). There is a small old chip on one of the feet (pic 9, bottom) that causes a little wobble. Besides that, just a few small patina scratches as is normal when you have very heavy patina on a formerly whitish pot. Check my other listings for more quality bonsai pots.
