Exceptional Samurai fireman Helmet, Kaji Kabuto. Fires were a big problem in Japan during Edo period and special samurai groups were on watch for the fires and would be first to respond and try to extinguish it , preventing wide spreading. Large fires devastated Edo, now Tokyo several times during that period, causing staggering loss of life and a major economical set back, so fires were taken extremely seriously.
This light helmet belonged to a leader of Samurai Firefighters and a wonderful example of elaborate metal and lacquer work. Back of the helmet guard decorated with brass or copper studs forming a constellation.
Fukigaeshi , side ear like attachment bearing samurai clan crests. Good condition with some expected abrasions and minor losses due to a very significant age as seen on the photos..
