A VERY RARE POLYCHROME SWORD STAND in the shape of weird scaly stylised fish!!! The most unusual sword stand I have encountered in 50 years of Japanese sword collecting!!! In my opinion (always given in good faith) this is an exceedingly old sword stand........ Edo Period 1600 to 1800's or earlier!
The three polychrome colours of red, blue and yellow on the dark hardwood background give a beautiful old feel! The colours and style of carving remind me very much of the Momoyama Period Temple carvings and early Chinese carvings! I have considered whether it may be Chinese, however it may be considerably rarer if that is the situation! The sword rack is solid, just a few age splits, knocks and scuffs commensurate with age!The rack measures approx 255mm wide (10 inches) at the widest point, by 245mm high (over 9 and a half inches), by 204mm deep (over 8 inches) across the fish, at the maximum depth, and weighs approx 900 Grams! A weird and wonderful stand! Please see my other items!
