Rare Japanese Cotton tea room carpet. Ako-Nabeshima. 1900-1930 XX93
Beautiful and rare japanese Dantsu, cotton carpet. Exellent example of unique japanese carpet industry, can be used as it is in a very good shape. Little known outside of Japan, this carpets were always reserved for a wealthy society of Samurai Lords or well to do merchants in early days. Traditionally carpets were made of same size as tatami mats and were often displayed in treasured tea rooms or meeting halls of the elite. The methods of making Nabeshima Dantsu cotton carpets came from China around 300 years ago, a manufacture was set up in Ogi area of Saga town (Nabeshima domain) under the patronage of influential Nabeshima samurai Lord. Cause of scarcity of wool and abundance of cotton, carpets were made from cotton treads and became known for its subtle beauty and softness and also tolerance to high humidity conditions. This carpet was manufactured in pre-war Japan and in a very well preserved condition.. Naturally there is some light patination and minor fading of colors due to a very significant age of the carpet. Size : 173/93cm (68 / 36.5 inch). Condition: some minor stains as seen on the photos.. Otherwise fine condition with expected fading due to the age. Please check with your country.
