It was completely hand-spun and hand-sewn, so it's likely this piece predates the popularization of textile and cotton spinning machines in the mid- and late-1800s. There are kikko (tortoise shell), fish, flower, and flowing water motifs on a deep indigo base. Some designs are dyed using shibori techniques.
The kimono is very soft, but the textile is rather thick cotton and stiff when worn, hence possibly why it has lasted this long. There are small cotton shoulder pads and lining fabric around the hips attached inside. There is some discoloration but not noticeable due to the dark color, but the fabric has collected some lint/dust through the years. Because this kimono is very old, it is also sized for a Japanese person in the 1800s.Thus, it is very short, but width-wise it could fit a modern person. It is strong enough to be worn, but like mentioned before, it is quite stiff, so would not be easily worn as a yukata/kimono with an obi. Plus, it is shorter than most modern yukata/kimono.
