Rare Antique Edwardian Anglo-Japanese-Style White Metal Repousse Glove Box
Stunning and very weighty antique Edwardian glove box dating to around 1910. Gloves were an essential item. For ladies from early Victorian times right through until the 1930's and were worn regularly on the street, at evening parties, to the opera, or theatre, at receptions, at balls, at church, when making a call, riding or driving, but not at a dinner. White kid was the preferred material for the well-to-do, which is why they needed to be stored properly to avoid soiling and in long boxes so they didn't need to be folded over more than once in the case of long evening gloves.

It is heavily influenced by the Anglo-Japanese style, developed in the United Kingdom from approximately 1851 to 1910's, when a new appreciation for Japanese design and culture influenced how designers and craftspeople made British art. The whole exterior surface of oxidised white metal is covered in a highly decorative repoussé design featuring chrysanthemums, sunflowers and daisies. In Japan, the chrysanthemum is a symbol of longevity and rejuvenation and sunflowers of adoration and loyalty. The interior is lined with a pale eau de nil silk lining which was padded in the lid and pleated around the sides. Sadly, this is where the box shows its age and the fact it has been well-loved, as this is has torn and frayed in a couple of places, but his could be easily replaced if desired.

The internal condition is reflected in the asking price. Measurements: length 12 ins (30 cms) x width 3.5 ins (9cms) x depth 2 ins 5cms. A rare and lovely item which would not look out of place in a modern setting, such is the quality of its design.
