RARE ANTIQUE JAPANESE BRONZE STEP VASE CHAMPLEVE CLOISONNÉ.. This listing is for an amazing 12 tall JAPANESE Bronze champleve cloisonnè vase decorated with polychrome enamel bands; the upper band shows motif that is repeated along the small bronze neck ring with scalloped top edge into the first band which reminds of the waves of the sea in turquoise and corral colouring. The next band is in lapis blue and colour colour which reminds me of the mountains. The next band in the centre is floral turquoise flowers with coral coloured centre with branches and leaves. The next is lotus flowers and what could be interpreted as frogs in lapis lazuli coloured enamel.
Then the final band is a repeat of the waves of the sea. A very lovely choice to remind us of the natural world around us. All of this is in high relief. The background is like the earth is a textured finish. On the base band there is a repeated circlet of what could be bat symbol.
I have found one handled vase with the same patternation and have shown it in the last photo with the base which is stamped. If anyone can tell me (if legible) what it stands for I shall be very pleased? MEASUREMENTS: Height 12" x 7" wide. CONDITION: Excellent antique condition consistent with age and use.
The base is in unstamped. Champlevé is an enamelling technique in the decorative arts, or an object made by that process, in which troughs or cells are carved, etched, die struck, or cast into the surface of a metal object, and filled with vitreous enamel. The piece is then fired until the enamel fuses, and when cooled the surface of the object is polished. The uncarved portions of the original surface remain visible as a frame for the enamel designs; typically they are gilded in medieval work.
[1] The name comes from the French for "raised field", "field" meaning background, though the technique in practice lowers the area to be enamelled rather than raising the rest of the surface. The technique has been used since ancient times, though it is no longer among the most commonly used enamelling techniques. Champlevé is suited to the covering of relatively large areas, and to figurative images, although it was first prominently used in Celtic art for geometric designs. In Romanesque art its potential was fully used, decorating caskets, plaques and vessels, in Limoges enamel and that from other centres.
Champlevé is distinguished from the technique of cloisonné enamel in which the troughs are created by soldering flat metal strips to the surface of the object. The difference between the techniques is analogous to the woodworking techniques of intarsia and marquetry. It differs from the basse-taille technique, which succeeded it in the highest quality Gothic work, in that the bottoms of the recesses for the enamel are rough, and so only opaque enamel colours are used.
In basse-taille the recesses are modelled, and translucent enamels are used, for more subtle effects, as in the 14th century Parisian Royal Gold Cup. If you need more photos or information please message me... I try to describe all the items as accurately and as honestly as possible, and I always include photos or scans of the actual items. My items are usually vintage or antique, very rarely new, and condition will sometimes reflect this with minor marks, wear on gilding etc. Anything major such as cracks chips or major loss of gilding etc will be pointed out in the description and shown on the photos. If you are still unsure as to the condition etc. I do my best to research the item and its history and pass that information on to my customers, you can google items and find the same information I do. Vintage or pre-owned items will often show some signs of wear due to their age, and there may be something I overlooked.
