EXCELLENT EXAMPLES OF 19TH CENTURY JAPANESE LACQUER WORK. Original Japanese polished maroon lacquered covers - originally from a 19th century photograph album - with unusual photographic inlay. Two large panels of maroon polished lacquer, comprising the original upper and lower boards from a Japanese photograph album.
The panels loose (no longer conjoined with a spine). White paper pastedowns on verso of each board. Both boards with floral decoration to the lacquer in orange and black. The upper with a photographic inlay depicting a bridge across a river, surround by a gilt border. Size: each board - 39.5cm x 32cm x 1cm. Some discolouration to the sky area of the inlaid'photograph'. Minor abrasions to surface of inlay, and minor abrasions also to lacquer, with a few light scratches and one dint to rear panel.
