This is a fabulous piece of antique Meiji period Japanese furniture it is a tea tray and stand, lacquered in black with a painted gold floral design. It dates to around the 1850s and has several notable features (not to mention its rarity these tea tables are fragile and rarely survive). There are 17 porcelain tiles and inserts on the top, many of which are the Mons (or Kamons, similar to a family crest) of the family who owned this table (see photo 8). There is another tile of waves on the sea (photo 7), and the largest shows a Samurai in victorious combat, having just decapitated his opponent the painting on this tile is exquisitely done (photo 5). It does require restoration to the lacquer on the tray which has peeled and flaked off in areas, while the gold gilded decoration is also faded. The black and gold stand appears to have been restored in the past.
